# The first search, as a tutorial

Reference for the `vamo-setup` skill. The first search is where a person decides whether Vamo is
worth using. Make it about something they care about, keep it short, and teach one idea at a time,
each attached to a result they can see.

## Pick what to search for

In this order:

1. **Something they already said.** A role, a technology or a person they mentioned while setting
   up. Use it.
2. **Ask once.** "What are you hiring for right now? One line is enough." If they answer, use it.
3. **Offer three.** If they would rather see it work first, offer three starts and run the one they
   pick:
   - "People building real-time voice agents"
   - "The strongest contributors to a well-known open-source project" (ask which one)
   - "Engineers in your city who work on payments"

Keep the first search to five to ten people. A long list buries the lesson.

## Run it and show it

Show each person on one line: who they are, where they are, and **why they matched**, naming the
repository or the work. Never show a list of names without the reason.

## Teach one lesson per step

Attach each lesson to what just happened, in one or two sentences. Stop after four. Skip any the
person already knows.

1. **Describe the work, not the title.** After the first results: "I searched for what these
people built. That is why you see the repository next to each name. A job title finds people
who use the title. The work finds people who did it."
2. **Facts are filters.** When you add a place, an employer or a seniority: "Place and company
are filters, so they narrow the list without changing what 'good' means. You can stack them."
3. **Read why they matched.** Point at one result: "This one matched on `<the repository>`. If
that is the wrong kind of work, tell me and I'll steer the search instead of dropping the person."
4. **The next moves.** Show the three things they can do from here:
   - **Find more like this person**: pick the best result and search for similar people.
   - **Look someone up**: hand over a GitHub username, a LinkedIn profile or a list, and get what
     they have built.
   - **Make it repeat**: run the same search each week and only see new people.

## Pitch it to the person

| They are | Do |
| --- | --- |
| New to this | Run one search, teach lessons 1 and 4, offer to do the next move for them |
| A recruiter or sourcer | Use their open role. Teach all four. Offer to turn the full job description into a search plan with the `vamo-search` skill's role-decomposition method |
| Technical | Show the request you sent and one field from the response. Mention that the same search runs from their own code with the direct API |

## End

Ask what they want next, and offer the best of the three moves for what you just found. Then stop
teaching. From here on, they ask and you search.
